Pikes Peak State Park, McGregor, and the surrounding region has experienced a long and colorful history since Father Marquette and Louis Joliet first viewed the area as their canoe reached the mouth of the Wisconsin River and its confluence with the Mississippi (click here for diorama portraying the arrival).  Read more about Pikes Peak history by clicking here.  Also, read about the colorful history of McGregor, the Ringling Brothers of circus fame who lived in McGregor, how the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers controlled the Mississippi River, the Upper Mississippi River Fish and Wildlife Refuge, that includes the river below the park, nearby Effigy Mounds National Monument, and the park across the river, Wisconsin’s Wyalusing State Park.
